A Qiu, a 12 year old Dong girl, an ethnic minority from Southern China, is brought up with her younger brother by their grandparents while the parents work at a building site in the provincial capital.

A Qiu divides her life between school, where she dreams of becoming a writer, and work in the rice fields. During the harvest, her grandmother dies and theparents return from the city for a while, but rebuilding the family ties and keeping the family farm afloat is not easy.
